CASTLE ROCK HISTORY: A TOWN BUILT ON "GEMS"
Ever wonder why our namesake rock formation hasn't crumbled away after millions of years? Most rock towers like "The Rock" are made of conglomerate stone that usually falls apart relatively quickly.
However, a recent study by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science discovered that Castle Rock is actually encased in a layer of opal and agate. Around 36 million years ago, volcanic ash from an eruption near Buena Vista dissolved into groundwater and seeped into the rock, essentially "gift-wrapping" every sand grain and pebble in precious gemstones. This created a natural cement harder than most modern concrete, which is why our iconic landmark still stands tall today!
